Lovers of old locomotives call Wolsztyn the steam eldorado of Europe. Every year by the beginning of May the fans are coming here in multitude for the Big Steam Show.

The engine-house of Wolsztyn has been constructed in year 1907. It is now the only such a place where it is possible to see an old locomotive setting out. There are all over the world museums or Skansen museums with locomotives but nowhere else they are used to work on routs.

Polish Post is bringing into circulation four post stamps on which are presented the locomotives from Wolsztyn. The graphic design of these stamps are based on the photos of Mr. Dariusz Gulowaty.

face value 1. 10PLN - slow train engine Okl-359. Constructed in Schwarzkopf plant in Berlin in 1917. She started service with Polish railways after the war. Since 1989 she is stationed in Wolsztyn.

face value 1. 10PLN - slow train engine 01 49-7. Has been constructed in the plant of Fablok - Chrzanow in 1949. She was produced up to the year 1954. She is now the most frequently used locomotive in the engine-house of Wolsztyn, used to conduct slow-trains.

face value 2 PLN - freight train engine Tki-87. It is the oldest locomotive in the Wolsztyn engine-house. She has been constructed in Krolewiec /Konigsberg/ in 1908 to the order of the Prussian railways. After the war she came to Poznan. In 1995 she has been stationed in Wolsztyn.

face value 2 PLN - fast train engine Pm 36-2 called, "The Beautiful Helene". In 1936 the construction office for locomotives in Chrzanow has worked out an experimental set of the locomotive for light fast trains marked Pm 36-2. One year later have been constructed two engines of this set. One of them , Pm 36-2, has survived the turmoil of the war and has been exploited up to the year 1965. After a reconditioning in 1995 she has been stationed in Wolsztyn.

On the 30th of September will take place the ceremony of the premiere of the film "THE VENGEANCE" under the direction of Andrzej Wajda. The film is a screening of the comedy of Aleksander Fredro.

Polish Post is commemorating this event bringing into circulation 6 post stamps each of a face value of 1, 10 PLN. They will be issued under a form of a decorative editorial sheetlet.

Aleksander Fredro /1793-1876 is considered as the most outstanding Polish comedy writer. His works concern mainly the everyday life of the yeomenry of Galicia in the I half of the XIX century.

The subject of "The Vengeance", work written in 1832-33 is the border wall or specifically a castle, to which rights claimed to have two personages of the comedy Czesnik and Rejent. In the work has been described a perfect picture of Poles. Fredro has created a gallery of noblemen personages, representing different kinds of cultural structures. You can find here personages from the Sas period /Czesnik, Dyndalski, Rejent as well as typical figures from the Stanislaw period./Papkin/.

On the post stamps have been presented artistically composed frames of the film of Andrzej Wajda. In these frames have been presented in order of apparition the main heroes of the comedy.

XVIII General Convention of the Delegates of the Polish Philatelic Association in Ciechocinek

In the days 4-6 October will take place the mentioned event. The object of the taking place every four years convention is the election of the new authorities of the Association. In the convention will participate 54 delegates, honour members of PPA and the representatives of Polish Post.

The post stamp brought into circulation which commemorates this event represents the Well-room of Mineral Waters. Constructed from timber in Switzerland style it has been erected in the years 1880-1881 according to the design of Edward Cichocki.

Ciechocinek - called the Pearl of the Polish Health Resorts is one of the most famous resort. It is hold in estimation thanks to its natural healing springs and microclimate. The wealth of Ciechocinek are salt waters having therapeutic proprieties.

The turning point in the history of Ciechocinek was the year 1836, when in the local inn have been installed four therapeutic copper bath tubs. This has initiated the Spring Plant which was the origin of the resort. With the time Ciechocinek has been growing more and more popular, have been erected pension houses for the more and more numerous visitors.

The resort was expending and developing. It ended by granting to Ciechocinek in 1916 the rights of a city.

As before Ciechocinek attracts to-day bathers and holiday visitors not only because of its healing properties but also for its picturesque landscape, the green of the numerous squares and stroll areas.

Following the cycle " Sanctuaries of the Holy Lady", Polish Post will put into circulation consecutive three post stamps. They represent the effigies of the Holy Virgin, who has been crowned by the Holy Father, John Paul II. They are:
  • face value 1, 10 PLN - the Holy Lady of Incessant Assistance from the church of the Holy Lady of Incessant Assistance in Jaworzno. The church - sanctuary in which the painting is presented has been erected in 1984. Earlier there was here a priesthood centre with a chapel to which came in 1978 a pilgrim - cardinal Karol Wojtyła. The presented on the stamp effigy is a copy of the painting which is presented in the church of Saint Alfonso in Rome.
  • face value 1, 10 PLN - the Holy Virgin of Opole from the cathedral of the Saint Cross. The painting is from the end of the XV century, originated from a town Piekary. It has been painted on a lime-tree board by an unknown artist of Bohemian painting school. .Being anxious of the Swedish charge /the Deluge/ the authorities has transferred the painting in 1702 to Opole. Since that the painting of the Holy Virgin of Piekary is permanently in Opole.
  • face value 2, 00 PLN - the Holy Virgin of Tr±bki from the church of Assumption of the Holy Lady in Tr±bki Wielkie. This church belongs to one of the oldest parishes on the Maritime Region. Already on the XIII century there was here a temple, destroyed on the XVII century probably during the Swedish wars.
    In 1730 the head of the Maritime department /Voivode/ Konstancja Czapska has obtained in Rome special indulgences for the pilgrims coming to Tr±bki Wielkie and has erected the existing up to now parish church, in which is presented the effigy of Holy Lady.
    The painting of the unknown artist has been likely created in the painting centre of Gdańsk in the second half of the XVII c.

The VII visit of the pope John Paul II in Poland will take place in the days from 16th to 19th of August current year. The Pope will visit among other the sanctuary of Calvary Zebrzydowska, celebrating its 400 years anniversary. The pope will also consecrate the basilica of God's Mercy in Łagiewniki in Cracow.

Polish Post, as by previous years, will commemorate the consecutive pilgrimage issuing at this occasion three post stamps. They represent:

  • face value 1, 10 PLN - the pope John Paul II on the background of the basilica of Virgin Mary of the Angel from the sanctuary in Calvary Zebrzydowska. The sanctuary has been erected at the beginning of the XVII c. as the foundation of Mikołaj Zebrzydowski and is to-day in Poland one of the most interesting architectural and landscape site as well as the most frequented pilgrimage place in Poland. With this sanctuary was strongly bound The Saint Father John Paul II, who was coming here frequently.
  • face value 1, 80 PLN - the pope John Paul II on the background of the sanctuary of God's Mercy in Łagiewniki. It is situated on the estate of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Virgin Mary's Mercy. The convent of this congregation was well known to the pope. Already during the occupation times, going to his work in Solvey he was passing by the site and was calling at the monastery's chapel.
  • face value 3, 20 PLN - the silhouette of the pope John Paul II on the background of the Wawel castle. The hill of Wawel in Cracow was from the dawn of the Polish history a centre of the authority secular and ecclesiastic. In the year 1000 has been created in Cracow the seat of the episcopate and soon after has been erected on the Wawel hill the first cathedral. The Wawel castle was used by the sovereigns of Poland as a residence from the first half of the XI century up to the beginning of the XVII c. It got its present shape in the years 1504-1535 by the times of the kings Aleksander Jagiellończyk /1501-1506/ and Zygmunt Stary /1506-1548/.

This year the most important of prestige philatelic exhibitions are: the world exhibition in South Korea - Philakorea 2002 and the international exhibition in Holland - Amphilex 2002.

The exhibition in Seoul will take place from the 2nd to the 11th of August. In the last two days will take place the 67th congress of FIP /Federation Internationale de Philatelie/.

The aim of Philakorea is to celebrate this year XVII World Soccer Championship and the XIV Asiatic Games in Pusan.. It is also an excellent occasion to promote Korean culture.

The exhibition in Amsterdam will take place from 30th August till 3rd September.. It has been organised on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the issuing of the first Dutch stamp in 1852.

Polish Post, which takes part in the exhibition in Holland will commemorate these two significant events in the philatelic world by putting into circulation a post stamp. It presents the flower of Hibiskus - a national symbol of South Korea and Tulips - representing Holland.

200th anniversary of Ignacy Domeyko's birthday

In the year 2002 we have the 200th anniversary of Ignacy Domeyko's birthday /1802-1889/ an outstanding Polish patriot and scientist. On this occasion Polish Post together with Chile Post will issue a post stamp.

Ignacy Domeyko of formation mineralogist and geologist from the University of Vilnius, took part in the national uprising. After the defeat of this uprising he has emigrated. In France he was pursuing university studies, geology and mining. In 1837 he graduated the Paris Ecole des Mines as mining engineer.

In 1838 he has gone to Chile, where he stayed up to his death in 1889. He formed there the scientific bases of the exploitation of the Chile natural resources. He has formed a meteorological network and has created an ethnographical museum. He was professor and more then 15 years rector of the biggest university in Santiago, Chile.

His activity in Chile has greatly contributed to the cultural and industrial development of this country. By his name have been called among other minerals and a mountain range in the Anda mountains.

Pursuing the cycle "Polish Cities", Polish Post put into circulation two successive stamps on which are presented:

face value 1, 80 PLN - a Roman paten year 1193, linked with the personage of Mieszko Stary, now kept in the treasury of the basilica of Holy Mary Assumption - sanctuary of St. Joseph in Kalisz. On the background of the stamp there is to be seen the facade of the basilica.
The oldest reference about Kalisz comes from the II century A.D. when Claudio Ptolemeo put down in his book "Epitome on Geography" the name "Kalisia". Thanks to this Kalisz got the honourable appellation of the oldest town in Poland.

face value 2, 60 PLN - herma - reliquary of St. Sigizmunt, from the donation of Kazimir the Big in year 1370 in the form of a bust, kept now in the church of Holy Mary Assumtion in Płock. On the background of the stamp is to be seen the general outline of the castle-cathedral on the Tum Hill.
The early stage of the town is closely linked with the period of formation of the Polish state.. The germ of Płock was the erected in the X century, on the place of a pagan worship centre, on the same Tum Hill, an abode of a feudal sovereign.
A huge historical promotion of Płock, which created from this town the most important next to Cracow centre of culture, took place during the rule of Władislaw Herman /1079 - 1102/, when Płock became the capital of Poland.
